Well one way is to invite people to create own themes for the desktop.
Now this is already possible if you are an developer and you know C++.
Well I’m not that and alot more people, but still i would like to make my own themes.

I know Gnome offer this option with an pixbuf engine where people can create themes by using png images,
but we are missing this part and there for we are having just few themes.

Now what can be done

I think one way for KDE to get more artist if we could make people create own themes.
What i would like to see if in SVG Theme Engine.
Where people can customize preaty much everything. From toolbars, buttons, comboboxes etc…
This would definitivly open another world for all artists out there aswell increase the use of KDE and I’m preatty sure about this.
So if there is any kind soul out there who would do this im sure many, many people will thank you.

And no there is nonthing wrong with OXYGEN Theme. It’s awesome! But let’s invite more people to do own themes with
and SVG Theme Engine!

Cheerz!
Nookie^

UPDATE!!!

I have been notified that such engine already exist but it haven’t recived that attention which it deservs.
The theme engine can be found on:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/QuantumStyle?content=101088

So let’s help this guys out and make some themes!
All artist you have now chanse to help out!
THANX FOR THIS!!!

Sometimes when i work ideas can just pop up in my head if i see an application
and how it could be done in another way.

Yesterday i started about the dialog for adding widgets dialog.
There is nonthing wrong how it looks today but for some reason i just wanted to come
home from work all day long today to realize an idea i had for it.

Here is how it looks today.

As soon as i came home today i started to mock on my idea and it took me only an hour to
finish it up.

So here is the mocks which i have made. Take a look at the first.

Now let me explain some things.

Icons in the widget window or call it whatever you want are 64×64 used.
You can simply add more widgets in the way you do today.

Widgets could be categorized aswell. I need to make mock with categories to
show it to you. You would be able to drag the widgets to desktop or panel as today so not much changed here.
Those blue dots on top on some widgets is showing what widgets are added and if you press on that dot you will remove
the widget..

It may look little bit strange with the blue panel but it’s just because the things i have mocked are quite sharp
and therefor such difference compared to the panel.

You might ask yourself what will happen to all windows that i have opened?
Well as the panel slides up nicely all windows should go into minimize and therefor
the user will be able to see the desktop clearly and drag the widget where ever he wants to.
To the desktop or to the panel.

Next mock is showing what is happening if you press on manage widgets

As you can see the menu has changed to

Download widgets

Install from local file

and.. uninstall widgets totaly.

Next mockup is showing what is happening if you want to remove the widget totaly
and when you have pressed on the button “Uninstall widget”

As you can see a small dots on each widget has appeared with an x above it.
That mean just press on that “button” or what ever we call it to uninstall the widget totaly.

We don’t want to have a user who accidently removes the widget so we need a confirmation
box. Let me show it aswell with a mock.

As you can see here all widgets and everything behind is gone because i want the user to focus on what he is doing.
He has here an option to regret his choise he made earlier.
If the user presses cancel he will get the default view back.

I hope really that someone of you likes this idea and that one day it could be implemented in KDE.
Leave comments and let us discuss it =)

Have a nice weekend

Well there are some stuff that i would like to have fixed in near future in KDE 4.x
Let’s start right away.

1. Widget’s in the panel and their height

Let’s start by showing how it’s currently looking.

For some reason the height to the top of the panel is 7px height and from the bottom it’s only 3 px.
I haven’t changed any panel height and this is default.
My proposal is to make it in the middle.. Maybe 5px from the bottom and from the top.
I’m sure thing would look my more organized and better then…
Let’s jump on next thingy..

2. Decide where to have the widgets placed. Panel or Systemtray

Sometimes some widgets doesnt seems to fit into the panel as this networkmanager icon
and this clock.. I guess it would be looking better inside the systemtray. Buy hey i’m might be wrong
and please tell me if i’m.

Here is a small mock on how user could decide where he wants to place the widget he is adding.
When user is trying to add widget to panel he could get a question maybe like this?

I think it would be good idea to have it like this don’t you?

3. Proxy Issues

I know this issue has been on the table for a looooong time but please can someone look over it.
I think it’s important to get this part working since alot of companies are using proxy
including the one i’m working at and alot of users are stopped to use kde distros since they can
not get this thing to work.. I really hope this will be solved by some nice person out there
preaty soon =)

That’s for now but im sure i will come up with some more suggestions very very soon.
Im always looking around to improve KDE.

Have a nice day.
